Plan your vacation with our Washington highlights and local information
Washington Vacation Rentals – Washington Travel
With a wonderful mix of outdoors and city, sea and mountain, Washington has much to offer in a vacation. You can head to the Space Needle and Pike Place Market in Seattle, or visit the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument or take the Cascade Loop driving tour.
Seattle area
Seattle seems to define what Washington is about, with its mix of city highlights and country charm. For the tourist, nothing beats going onto the Odeck of the Space Needle and following that with a coffee at the original Starbucks. Take a little tour of history -- and witness the famous fish throwing -- at Pike Place Market. Since grunge and garage rock music had their start here, heading for a club is a good idea. For the country charm, think about visiting the Columbia River Plateau region, which offers the unexpected high desert lands. There, you can find an array of recreation, including fishing, boating, golf and cycling. The Gingko Petrified Forest State Park offers history, and you can learn about agriculture at one of the many wineries in Wine Country, where the Yakima Valley wines are rated highly. Taking a tour of the wine area provides a nice counterpoint to the hustle and bustle of the nearby city.
Volcano Country
Three major volcanoes -- Rainier, Adams and Mount St. Helen -- loom over this area. In Olympia, the Washington state capital, there's plenty to do, ranging from touring the State Capital Museum, enjoying the splendor of gardens, dining on fusion cuisine, and the Olympia Flight Museum to view military aircraft. You can enjoy scenic views while playing a round of golf here. Hikers of various levels will enjoy the North Cascades, which are striking mountains with jagged peaks. The Skagit Valley might afford a bald eagle sighting or beautiful tulip fields. The Methow Valley is popular with cross-country skiers. Highway 20 is the only road through North Cascades National Park, and provides spectacular views. Fishing is excellent here as well.
Rocky Mountain Gateway
This dense forest and mountain region features the Colville National Forest with more than 1 million acres, and fir trees that rise to 7,000 feet. In Spokane, enjoy reasonable prices for ticket prices for performances there, and visit the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture. There are several casinos just waiting for your lucky arm. There are plenty of outdoor activities here, as well, with the Blue Mountains providing a great amount of snow for skiing. Head to the Palouse area, which is abundant in wheat, and features the Palouse Falls, which run down 198 feet over basalt lava. Wildlife is abundant here -- cougar and Rocky Mountain elk roam this region. For history, head to the Boomerang Newspaper and Printing House, which recounts the Palouse history.
Olympic and Kitsap Peninsulas region
This interesting area of Washington abounds with activity possibilities. Olympic National Park and Forest includes 2 million acres of land, while the Kitsap Peninsula is full of unique shops and galleries. For outdoor activities, consider llama trekking or scuba diving. The simple feel of the Washington coast helps visitors enjoy the migratory birds found here, the whale watching that can be enjoyed here, and the fishing and clam digging. On Long Beach Peninsula, visit the World Kite Museum and Hall of Fame. The Islands Region of Washington includes the islands such as Camano, Fidalgo, the San Juan Islands and Whidbey Island. There's plenty of canoeing and kayaking taking place here. The sunny San Juan Islands have four particular destination islands that are perfect for those who enjoy hiking, biking, yachting and boating.
Get outdoors in Washington
Although you can have a city vacation in Washington and never avail yourself of its beautiful outdoors, you might miss the best of what Washington has to offer. Thanks to the variety of water in Washington -- there's the Pacific Ocean, the Columbia and Snake Rivers, Puget Sound and various lakes and streams -- the multitude of water activities astounds. In both winter and summer there are plenty of activities to keep even the most active person happy. Try biking, hiking, hang gliding, paragliding, hot air ballooning, mountain climbing or golfing.
Other things to do and sites to see in Washington include: Whidbey Island Garden Tours; Hells Canyon; Long Beach Peninsula; Skagit Tours; Exotic Meat Company; Grand Coulee Dam; Columbia County Courthouse; Hanford Reach National Monument; and Snoqualmie Falls.
