Virginia Vacation Rentals – Virginia Travel

With a fun mix of U.S. history, outdoor activities and a location on the edges of Washington, D.C., Virginia is home to many vacation destinations. Here you can visit the Booker T. Washington National Monument in Roanoke, the Fredericksburg Battlefield and the Jamestown Settlement.

Blue Ridge Highlands

This area nearly bursts with natural beauty and outdoor fun. You can visit the Virginia Tech Geological Sciences Museum in Blacksburg, or visit the birthplace of country music in Bristol, a status it shares with Tennessee. A number of the restored buildings in Oldetown in Wyethville date from before the 1830s.

Central Virginia

The area of Central Virginia is steeped in history, ranging from the early settlers, to the birth of the United States to the Civil War and African-American Capitalism. In Charlottesville, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello is a must-visit side tour as is James Monroe's Montpelier. Be sure to take in the Black History Museum and Cultural Center and the Museum and White House of the Confederacy. In Lynchburg, explore the Blackwater Creek Bikeway and Riverwalk, and be sure to enjoy the eclectic collection of neighborhoods that make up Richmond's old and new culture.

Shenandoah Valley

With more than 200 miles of scenic views, this area offers up many opportunities to enjoy the view, from driving to golfing. There are many golf courses scattered throughout the area. Tour the Battle of Front Royal Historic Area from the Civil War. Take in some festivals in the "festival city" of Roanoke, whether it's a nature festival or cook-off. This region is in fact known for its arts and crafts fairs.

Appalachia

The Heart of Appalachia, on the western edge of Virginia, is full of natural wonder. In Breaks Interstate Park, "the Grand Canyon of the South", the Russell Fork River provides whitewater rafting opportunities. Take a chairlift at Natural Tunnel State Park for a view of the limestone formations.

Eastern Shore

This area has a reputation for being an outdoor playground amid quiet towns and fishing villages. No vehicles are allowed on Tangier Island, but you can drive a golf cart here. In Chincoteague, there's an abundance of clamming, crabbing and fishing, as well as many places to take a bike or hike. Bird watching is also popular here.

Tidewater/Hampton Roads Region

This area is a well-known vacation destination, which features a "historic triangle" with Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown forming the corners. But this area also has all the fun features of a resort area -- golf, shopping and dining can be found in abundance here. Hampton and Newport News combine military and history with many related activities. Virginia Beach has dolphin watching and exciting nightlife along with all the usual beach pleasures -- the East Coast Surfing Championships are held here.

Northern Virginia

This interesting area combines a strong Virginia history with upscale suburban character. Thanks to its position on the outskirts of Washington, D.C., there's a bustle of activities here. In Alexandria, Old Town is juxtaposed against an otolaryngology museum. In McLean, shop at the large Tysons Corner Mall; in Manassas Museum, you can discover great history. Lake Anna provides great outdoor recreation, while Fredericksburg features historical sites. Visit Leesburg for the Oatlands Plantation, which is graced with substantial formal gardens.

Chesapeake Bay

A restful pace can be found in this water-bound area. You can take any number of fishing charters in the Northern Neck area, or you can take a paddle tour or rent a canoe or kayak. Take a cruise up the Rappahannock River to a winery or to see fishing villages. You might want to stop at the restored house of the George Washington Birthplace National Monument, or go antique shopping, especially in Tappahannock.

Other sites to see and things to do in Virginia include: The Anne Spencer House and Garden in Lynchburg; Downtown historic district in Leesburg; St. John's Church in Hampton; Historical Markers in Fredericksburg; and a driving and walking tour in Old Town Manassas.
