Oregon Vacation Rentals – Oregon Travel
Oregon seamlessly blends mountains with coast, nature with arts and much more. A trip here might take you on a tour of area lighthouses or to the Japanese Gardens in Portland. You might find yourself at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport or the Blue Heron French Cheese Company in Tillamook.
Portland
Portland is a great mix of city and country, with an emphasis on art and nightlife. The Portland Art museum is among the largest in the United States and showcases Native American, Asian, European, American and contemporary art. The downtown Portland area and Pearl District are known for the interesting old industrial buildings that have been turned into galleries, restaurants and unique stores. Portland has a number of craft beer brewers, and a unique city cruise among the Willamette River on the Portland Spirit.
Columbia River Gorge
The tallest peak in the Oregon Cascades, Mt. Hood looms high over the river gorge and offers snowboarding and skiing year-round. There a number of other outdoor activities like skateboard parks and skydiving as well. There are many waterfalls from the cliffs into the river. Geology specimens from the Pacific Northwest are featured at the Hutson Museum, as well as Native American artifacts and crafts.
Eastern Oregon
This area might not have a big population, but it's big on fun activities. Here, you can take a three to six day rafting trip in the deepest canyon in the United States with Hells Canyon Whitewater. In Pendleton, the Tamastslikt Cultural Institute shows -- through amazing exhibits and displays -- a cultural and historical view of the Umatilla Tribes. At the national Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center you can learn the story of the pioneer journey on the Oregon Trail.
Southern Oregon
Hollywood types often get away to Southern Oregon, which hosts the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland each year. Other visitors enjoy Crater Lake National Park in Klamath County, famous for the deep blue Crater Lake the 33-mile long drive around. In the summer, hiking and boat tours are popular, while in the winter you can go cross-country skiing or try your hand at walking in snowshoes. Explore the natural phenomenon called the Oregon Vortex in Gold Hill.
Central Oregon
Outdoor activities dominate this generally sunny region with a high desert landscape. Mt. Bachelor located here has one of the longest ski seasons in North America. Maupin is noted for its steel head and wild trout populations perfect for fishing and offers whitewater rafting as well. Golf is big here and this area also has a strong complement of music and art.
Willamette Valley
The wine country in the Willamette Valley is lauded worldwide for its excellent Pinot Gris, Riesling and Pinot Noir. Famous for its diversity in crops, this area also boasts of the highest population of covered bridges north of the Mississippi River. The capital city of Salem features a capitol building famous for its depression-era art and varied marbles. The Eugene-Springfield area is a fun mix of upscale and down-home, and that is reflected in its music, which ranges from classical to country.
Beaches and Dunes
Oregon has 400 miles of beaches and sand dunes and every single one of them is open to the public. This area has a nice, temperate climate and is popular with vacationers. Depoe Bay, called the "smallest harbor in the world", is filled with unique dining featuring fresh seafood and shopping. In Garibaldi, you can take a fishing charter side trip. Astoria and Warrenton are set in a Victorian setting and hold historical significance as the western end of the Lewis and Clark Trail.
Byways
Oregon is nationally known for its scenic byways and traveling one of them is a great way to see the state. The Volcanic Scenic Byway is a great spot from which to view Crater Lake and perhaps bald eagles, wile the Hells Canyon Byway features tall Wallowas with a mile-deep gorge. Take the Historic Columbia River Highway for walls of moss, wonderful views of Mt. Hood and numerous waterfalls.
Other things to do and sites to see in Oregon include: Alder House Museum in Baker City; Douglas County Courthouse in Roseburg; Applegate Trail interpretive kiosk in Canyonville City Park; John Day Fossil Beds; Doe Wright Observatory in McKenzie Pass; Newberry National Volcanic Monument; and T & T Wildlife Tours in Haines.
