New Hampshire Vacation Rentals – New Hampshire Travel
New Hampshire offers the best of what New England has to offer -- plenty of winter skiing, tons of history and a wealth of outdoor recreation and mountain areas.
Here, you can take a walking tour of Dover or visit the American Independence Museum in Exeter. You might enjoy Mary Baker Edy Historic House in Concord or be impressed by the sand dunes at Hampton Beach State Park.
Southwest New Hampshire
The most climbed mountain in the world, Mt. Monadnock, has its own region in this part of New Hampshire. The area is full of historical sites, quaint villages and natural beauty. You might visit New Ipswich and see the Barrett House which features French scenic wallpaper, or visit the six covered bridges which are particularly scenic in the fall foliage season. Head for the Fort at No. 4 Living History Museum, which travels back in time to the 1740s and the Indian and French War.
White Mountains Region
This area is a year-round adventure area, and features many bodies of water perfect for boating, fishing and swimming. In the winter, cross-country skiing is popular as well. This area also has a number of resorts, many of them true spas offering a variety of services. Visit Echo Lake State Park for rock climbing, or Franconia Notch State Park for a scenic drive.
Dartmouth/Lake Sunapee
Filled with beautiful scenery and history, there's plenty to do in this region. Visit wooded Pillsbury Park in Washington for canoeing and fishing on May Pond, or visit Sunapee State Park with its Mount Sunapee, a year-round recreation site that also has a beach. The Sunapee Historic Society Museum features a steamboat exhibit and sits on the shores of Lake Sunapee, while the Enfield Shaker Museum traces the history of the Shakers with live demonstrations, walking tours and classes.
Seacoast Region
This area, true to its name, features a variety of beach areas ripe with picnicking, swimming and fishing opportunities. For impressive sand dunes, visit Hampton Beach State Park, or head for the Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, which features 48 miles of coastline. In Portsmouth, visit the oldest house in New Hampshire, Jackson House, circa 1664, or head for New Castle, home of the Fort Constitution Historic Site, which is a National Historic Landmark and has only the remains of the fort and panels to tell its story.
Great North Woods
An outdoor and culture lover's paradise, this area features a wonderful mix of both. For outdoor activities, there are many -- the woods and waters seem to come together here. There are plenty of opportunities for observing wildlife, camping, boating, fishing and hunting in the warm months, while winter provides skiing and snowmobiling. The Great Woods is near Quebec, Maine and Vermont, which means there are plenty of cultural opportunities.
Merrimack Valley
One of the more interesting sites in this area includes the Robert Frost home, the Robert Frost Farm Historic Site in Derry, where the poet lived from 1901 to 1909. There, he wrote his first set of poems. In Concord, the Christa McAuliffe Planetarium honors the woman who was the first teacher in space, while Manchester has the Millyard Museum, which details the lives and history of the residents there.
Lakes region
More than 250 ponds and lakes are found in the lakes region of New Hampshire, the largest of which is Lake Winnipesaukee. With all that water, there are ample opportunities for fishing, and beach activities like swimming and picnicking. The Whipple House Museum in Ashland honors Dr. George Hoyt Whipple, who won a Nobel Peace Prize for medicine. In this area, you can also enjoy a Summer Safari Tour, which mixes nature appreciation with theater and music.
New Hampshire Skiing
Skiing is billed as New Hampshire's state sport, and during the winter season, people from all over the world head here for skiing. Both advanced and beginning skiers can find their legs here as lessons are abundant. There is even a ski museum located in Franconia -- it's called the New England Ski Museum and it features ski equipment relics.
Other things to do and sites to see in New Hampshire include: Littleton Historic Sites walking tour; Wyman Tavern Museum in Keene; Governor John Wentworth Historic Site in Wolfeboro; the Haverhill Bridge in Woodville Village in Bath; the Sugar Hill Historical Museum; and the Franklin Pierce Homestead Historic Site in Hillsborough.
