Colorado Vacation Rentals – Colorado Travel
If it's an active vacation you crave with a heaping dose of nature, Colorado -- the "Centennial State" -- is a destination to consider. Only in Colorado can you enjoy a Blazing Adventures Jeep tour in Aspen or a Coors Brewery Tour in Golden.
Front Range
In the North Central -- or Front Range -- of Colorado, there's a strong sense of nature and that permeates many activities here. Indian Springs Resort in Idaho Springs features hot springs to soothe muscles, while the more active can take one of three well-known mine tours out of Idaho Springs. One of the mine tours leads into the gambling areas of Central City and Black Hawk. Head to Main Street in Idaho Springs for memorable food. The Buffalo Bar has been there since 1885 and serves a famous large breakfast, while Beau Jo's pizza is infamous.
Longs Peak, at 14,255 feet, is located at Estes Park and is popular with hikers and climbers. The restored Stanley Hotel is both famous and infamous for its role in Stephen King's "The Shining". If you visit in September, visit the unusual local event called the Longs Peak Scottish-Irish Festival, where traditional activities like a hammer throw and bagpipe music entertain visitors.
Northwest Colorado
Vacationing is popular in Northwest Colorado, where a number of resorts offer relaxation and rejuvenation. Thanks to Colorado's well-defined seasons, there are plenty of activities to amuse visitors in summer and winter.
At Keystone you can participate in Snowcat Bowl Skiing and a variety of summer festivals celebrating many cultures.
Beaver Creek -- a tiny town which boasts of old-world charm and posh, high-end amenities -- is the host of the World Cup Downhill Skiing championship, while Breckenridge has history dating back to Victorian times and features a national historical district. A variety of year-round outdoor activities beckon visitors here.
Perhaps Aspen is the best-known area of Northwest Colorado, however. With its striking Aspen Mountain, there are ski resorts galore here. In the summer you can take a chairlift ride in Snowmass, whose terminus is located in the middle of the mountain and afford excellent views and hiking and biking trails. Novices and experts can take paragliding lessons.
Southwest Colorado
The area of Southwest Colorado combines all that Colorado is famous for -- tranquil landscapes and beauty with active lifestyle activities. Vacationers might be surprised to find stone canyons and hot springs here.
The Durango area is an archaeological and historical area, with Spanish and Native American influences and Ananzi artifacts and cliff dwellings in the Heritage site of Mesa Verde National Park. The internationally known Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory headquarters are located in Durango as well. Telluride is located between peaks of the San Juan Mountains and it features a strong mountain spirit and modern-day sense in its National Historic District area. Mountain Village is linked to Telluride via gondola and features shopping, a championship golf course and a variety of creative dining options. Horseback riding and amazing wildflower color greets visitors to the hospitable Crested Butte and Gunnison County area.
Denver and Colorado Springs
Metropolitan pleasures can be found in Denver and Colorado Springs, the largest metropolitan areas in Colorado. Denver, known as the "Mile High" city, provides a list of things to do that's a mile long. From entertainment, nightlife and shopping in the downtown area to Victorian-era architecture that's been turned into art galleries and restaurants, the lower downtown area -- also home to six major brew pubs and microbreweries -- also has a lot to offer visitors. For those inclined to site-see, you can visit the Colorado State Capitol building, check out the large collection of Native American Art at the Denver Art Museum or visit Buffalo Bill's Grave and Museum.
Colorado Springs is home to the Air Force Academy and the U.S. Olympic Training Center. An extremely old site, Cave of the Winds offers various views from the three unique tours available. At the Flying W Ranch, be entertained and educated about cowboy heritage. Pike's Peak is also located in Colorado Springs. You might explore via driving it, hiking, biking or even riding on the cog railway.
Skiing in Colorado
Because Colorado enjoys a long snowy season -- and offers the challenges of the Rocky Mountains -- skiing is a main activity here. A variety of ski resorts offer instruction at varied levels. Snow arrives in some areas as early as mid-October and can last until June at Arapahoe Basin, the highest elevation ski area in North America.
Some other sites to see and things to do in Colorado include: Seven Falls in Colorado Springs; El Pomar Carriage House in Colorado Springs; the Molly Brown House in Denver; the Vallecito Lake area in Durango; the Maroon Bells in Aspen; and the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens in Vail.
