ABOUT THE ISLAND: Matinicus is a remote and beautiful island plantation laying in outer-Penobscot bay off the coast of Rockland, Maine. The island is almost two miles long and one mile wide with over 750 acres filled with hundreds of species of plants. The shores are rocky, the eastern shore being mostly granite, but there are two large crescent beaches with fine graying-white sand and several small pebble beaches. There are also countless rocky points and ledges overlooking Penobscot bay, the open ocean, and the surrounding islands.
Many areas on Matinicus Island are designated as bird sanctuaries where numerous (some rare) different types of birds can be observed. There are many trails throughout the island that are either navigated by bicycle, or by walking.
THINGS TO DO: Watch fishermen steaming out to haul and land lobsters from the deck. A three-minute walk to the harbor and a five-minute walk to a beautiful (& usually deserted), crescent-shaped sandy beach. A much larger, crescent-shaped sandy beach is a 20 minute hike along a dirt road and features gorgeous sweeping views of Criehaven Island, which is the setting for acclaimed writer, Elisabeth Ogilvie's "Bennett's Island" book series. Many of these literary works are in the cottage library, including the full set of "Tide" & "The Lover's" trilogies.

A local farmer's market has fresh produce & bakery items. Extra provisions can also be delivered by plane to a small landing strip from the mainland grocery store (Shaw's in Rockland) for a small fee.
